Open set

Definition

Let (X,τ)(X, \tau) be a topological space. A subset UU of XX is open in XX when U∈τU \in \tau. A subset of a metric space is open when it is open for the metric topology.

Remarks

In a metric space (X,d)(X, d), a set UU is open if and only if for each x∈Ux \in U there is ε>0\varepsilon > 0 with B(x,ε)⊆UB(x, \varepsilon) \subseteq U. This is the statement open sets of a metric space. In R\mathbb{R}, each open interval (a,b)(a, b) is open, but [0,1)[0, 1) is not open: no ball about 00 lies in [0,1)[0, 1). The empty set and XX are always open.

Explanations

L1 human

In a metric space, an open set has no edge points. From each of its points, you can move a little in any direction and stay in the set. The interval (0,1)(0, 1) is open, because each point has some room on both sides.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What depends on this
