statement proposition

Continuity via closed sets

Statement

Let XX and YY be topological spaces and let f ⁣:X→Yf \colon X \to Y be a function. Then ff is continuous if and only if for each closed set FF of YY, the preimage f−1(F)f^{-1}(F) is closed in XX.

Remarks

Proof: preimages commute with complements, that is, f−1(Y∖A)=X∖f−1(A)f^{-1}(Y \setminus A) = X \setminus f^{-1}(A) for each A⊆YA \subseteq Y. Then use that the complements of open sets are closed. For example, for a continuous f ⁣:R→Rf \colon \mathbb{R} \to \mathbb{R}, the set of zeros f−1({0})f^{-1}(\{0\}) is closed.

Explanations

L1 human

Continuity can be tested with closed sets as well as with open sets. This form is useful to show that a set given by an equation, such as {x:f(x)=0}\{x : f(x) = 0\}, is closed.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
