statement proposition

Path-connected spaces are connected

Statement

Let XX be a path-connected space. Then XX is connected.

Remarks

Proof: suppose open sets UU and VV split XX, with x∈Ux \in U and y∈Vy \in V. Take a path γ\gamma from xx to yy. Then γ([0,1])\gamma([0, 1]) is connected, by continuous image of a connected set is connected and connectedness of intervals. But UU and VV split it, a contradiction. The converse fails, as the topologist's sine curve shows. It holds for open subsets of R^n.

Explanations

L1 human

If you can walk between any two points, the space cannot be split into two separate open parts.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
