statement theorem
Connected subsets of the real line are intervals
Statement
Let , where has the usual topology. Then is connected if and only if is an interval, that is, for all and all with , .
Remarks
If is not an interval, take with and . Then and split . The proof that an interval is connected uses the completeness axiom. If open sets and split , with , and , let be the supremum of the points of . Then lies in neither nor . Under this definition the empty set and single points are intervals, and they are connected. The statement fails for : no interval of with more than one point is connected.
Explanations
L1 human
On the real line, the sets in one piece are exactly the intervals. The proof needs the completeness of , because has gaps where it can be split.
What this node needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
