statement proposition

Union of open sets is open

Statement

Let (X,d)(X, d) be a metric space and let (Ui)i∈I(U_i)_{i \in I} be a family of open subsets of XX, indexed by any set II. Then the union ⋃i∈IUi\bigcup_{i \in I} U_i is open in XX.

Remarks

Proof: let xx be in the union. Then x∈Ujx \in U_j for some j∈Ij \in I, and there is ε>0\varepsilon > 0 with B(x,ε)⊆UjB(x, \varepsilon) \subseteq U_j. This ball is also in the union. Then use open sets of a metric space. The family can be infinite, and even uncountable. In a general topological space, this property is one of the axioms.

Explanations

L1 human

Each point of the union lies in one of the open sets, and that set already gives a small ball about the point. For example, the union of the intervals (1/n,1)(1/n, 1) for n≥2n \ge 2 is the open interval (0,1)(0, 1).

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What depends on this

5 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
