Homeomorphism
Definition
Let and be topological spaces. A function is a homeomorphism when is bijective, is continuous, and the inverse function is continuous. The spaces and are homeomorphic when there is a homeomorphism .
Remarks
Equivalently, is a bijection and, for each , the set is open if and only if is open. The map is a homeomorphism from to . A continuous bijection need not be a homeomorphism: from to the circle is one example. For a compact domain and a Hausdorff target, it is always a homeomorphism. Homeomorphisms keep each topological property.
Explanations
L1 human
A homeomorphism is a way to deform one space into another by stretching and bending, without tearing or gluing. A coffee cup and a doughnut are homeomorphic, but a sphere and a doughnut are not.
What this node needs for W2
- edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
- edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
