Spanning set

Definition

Let FF be a field and let VV be a vector space over FF. A subset S⊆VS \subseteq V is a spanning set of VV, or spans VV, when span⁡(S)=V\operatorname{span}(S) = V, where span⁡\operatorname{span} is the linear span. Equivalently, each vector of VV is a linear combination of finitely many vectors of SS.

Remarks

The vectors (1,0),(0,1),(1,1)(1, 0), (0, 1), (1, 1) span R2\R^2, and so do (1,0),(0,1)(1, 0), (0, 1). A linearly independent spanning set is a basis. Every spanning set contains a basis. A vector space with a finite spanning set is finite-dimensional.

Explanations

L1 human

A spanning set is a set of building blocks from which we can make every vector of the space. It may contain more vectors than we need. Removing the extra vectors leaves a basis.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 5 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.

What depends on this

70 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
