Orthonormal basis

Definition

Let VV be a finite-dimensional inner product space over R\R or C\C. An orthonormal basis of VV is a basis (e1,…,en)(e_1, \dots, e_n) of VV that is an orthonormal family.

Remarks

An orthonormal family of dim⁡V\dim V vectors is an orthonormal basis. In an orthonormal basis, coordinates are inner products: v=∑i⟨v,ei⟩eiv = \sum_i \langle v, e_i \rangle e_i. The vectors 12(1,1)\frac{1}{\sqrt 2}(1, 1) and 12(1,−1)\frac{1}{\sqrt 2}(1, -1) form an orthonormal basis of R2\R^2. In infinite-dimensional Hilbert spaces, the term means a maximal orthonormal family, which is in general not a basis in the algebraic sense.

Explanations

L1 human

An orthonormal basis is a set of perpendicular unit vectors that spans the space. Each coordinate of a vector is its inner product with one basis vector. No linear system needs to be solved to find coordinates.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 11 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
