Principal axis theorem

Statement

Let AA be a real symmetric n×nn \times n matrix, and let Q(x)=xTAxQ(x) = x^T A x for x∈Rnx \in \R^n. Then there are an orthogonal matrix PP and real numbers λ1,…,λn\lambda_1, \dots, \lambda_n such that, for x=Pyx = P y, Q(x)=λ1y12+λ2y22+⋯+λnyn2.Q(x) = \lambda_1 y_1^2 + \lambda_2 y_2^2 + \cdots + \lambda_n y_n^2. The numbers λi\lambda_i are the eigenvalues of AA, and the columns of PP are orthonormal eigenvectors of AA.

Remarks

It follows from the spectral theorem A=PDPTA = P D P^T with DD diagonal. The lines spanned by the columns of PP are the principal axes of QQ. For example, Q(x)=5x12+4x1x2+2x22Q(x) = 5x_1^2 + 4x_1 x_2 + 2x_2^2 has the eigenvalues 66 and 11, so it becomes 6y12+y226y_1^2 + y_2^2. So the curve Q(x)=1Q(x) = 1 is an ellipse, with semi-axes 1/61/\sqrt 6 and 11.

Explanations

Each real quadratic form becomes a sum of squares after a rotation of the axes, possibly with a reflection. The new axes are the principal axes of the form. This is how we find the shape of an ellipse or a hyperbola from its equation.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
