Bilinear form

Definition

Let FF be a field and let VV be a vector space over FF. A bilinear form on VV is a map B ⁣:V×V→FB \colon V \times V \to F such that, for all u,v,w∈Vu, v, w \in V and a∈Fa \in F:

  1. B(u+v,w)=B(u,w)+B(v,w)B(u + v, w) = B(u, w) + B(v, w) and B(au,w)=aB(u,w)B(au, w) = a B(u, w).
  2. B(u,v+w)=B(u,v)+B(u,w)B(u, v + w) = B(u, v) + B(u, w) and B(u,aw)=aB(u,w)B(u, aw) = a B(u, w).

Remarks

The dot product on Rn\R^n is a bilinear form. For each n×nn \times n matrix MM over FF, the map B(x,y)=xTMyB(x, y) = x^T M y is a bilinear form on FnF^n. The bilinear forms on VV form a vector space over FF; if dim⁡V=n\dim V = n, it has dimension n2n^2. More generally, a bilinear map V×W→FV \times W \to F uses two different spaces.

Explanations

L1 human

A bilinear form takes two vectors and gives a number. It is linear in the first vector and also linear in the second vector. The dot product is the main example, but bilinear forms need not be symmetric or positive.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 2 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
  • no evidence level

  2. Bilinear form definition

What depends on this

20 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
