Alternating bilinear form

Definition

Let FF be a field and let VV be a vector space over FF. A bilinear form BB on VV is alternating when B(v,v)=0for all v∈V.B(v, v) = 0 \qquad \text{for all } v \in V.

Remarks

An alternating form is skew-symmetric: B(u,v)=−B(v,u)B(u, v) = -B(v, u) for all u,vu, v. If the characteristic of FF is not 22, each skew-symmetric form is alternating. On F2F^2, the form B(x,y)=x1y2−x2y1B(x, y) = x_1 y_2 - x_2 y_1 is alternating; it is the determinant of the matrix with the columns xx and yy. A nondegenerate alternating form is a symplectic form.

Explanations

L1 human

An alternating form gives zero when both vectors are equal. Then swapping the two vectors changes the sign of the value. The signed area of the parallelogram spanned by two plane vectors is an example.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 3 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
