Basis

Definition

Let FF be a field and let VV be a vector space over FF. A basis of VV is a family (bi)i∈I(b_i)_{i \in I} of vectors of VV that is linearly independent and spans VV.

Remarks

A family (bi)i∈I(b_i)_{i \in I} is a basis if and only if each v∈Vv \in V is equal to ∑i∈Iaibi\sum_{i \in I} a_i b_i for exactly one finitely supported family of scalars (ai)i∈I(a_i)_{i \in I}. The scalars aia_i are the coordinates of vv in the basis. The standard basis e1,…,ene_1, \dots, e_n is a basis of FnF^n; the vectors (1,1)(1, 1) and (1,−1)(1, -1) form another basis of R2\R^2. Every vector space has a basis, and all bases of a space have the same cardinality.

Explanations

L1 human

A basis is a set of directions that is just right: enough to reach every vector, and none of them redundant. Once we fix a basis, each vector gets a unique list of coordinates. A vector space has many bases, but all of them have the same number of vectors.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 7 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
