statement proposition

Dimension of a subspace

Statement

Let FF be a field, let VV be a finite-dimensional vector space over FF, and let WW be a linear subspace of VV. Then WW is finite-dimensional, and dim⁡W≤dim⁡V\dim W \le \dim V, where dim⁡\dim is the dimension.

Remarks

A basis of WW is a linearly independent family in VV, so it has at most dim⁡V\dim V vectors. Equality holds only when W=VW = V, see a subspace of full dimension is the whole space. For infinite-dimensional VV, the inequality dim⁡W≤dim⁡V\dim W \le \dim V of cardinals still holds.

Explanations

L1 human

A subspace cannot have more independent directions than the space around it. A plane in ordinary space has dimension 22, which is at most 33. The only subspace with the same dimension is the whole space.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 10 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
