definition

Determinant of a linear map

Definition

Let FF be a field, let VV be a finite-dimensional vector space over FF, and let T ⁣:V→VT \colon V \to V be an endomorphism. The determinant of TT is det⁡T=det⁡[T]B,\det T = \det [T]_B, the determinant of the matrix of TT in a basis BB of VV.

Remarks

The value does not depend on BB, because another basis gives a similar matrix P−1[T]BPP^{-1}[T]_B P, with the same determinant. It satisfies det⁡(S∘T)=det⁡S⋅det⁡T\det(S \circ T) = \det S \cdot \det T and det⁡id⁡V=1\det \id_V = 1. The map TT is invertible if and only if det⁡T≠0\det T \ne 0. For V=0V = 0, the convention is det⁡T=1\det T = 1.

Explanations

L1 human

We define the determinant of a linear map with its matrix in some basis. Another basis changes the matrix, but not the determinant. So the determinant belongs to the map itself, like the trace.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 18 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
