Rank of a matrix
Definition
Let be a field and let be an matrix over . The rank of is the dimension of the column space of .
Remarks
The rank is the maximal number of linearly independent columns of . It also equals the dimension of the row space, by row rank equals column rank. It equals the number of pivots in a row echelon form of , and the largest order of a nonzero minor of . An matrix is invertible if and only if its rank is .
Explanations
L1 human
The rank of a matrix counts how many of its columns are really independent. For , the second column is twice the first, so the rank is . We compute the rank by row reduction and count the pivots.
What this node needs for W2
- edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
- edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
