Change of basis formula

Statement

Let FF be a field and let VV and WW be finite-dimensional vector spaces over FF. Let B,B′B, B' be bases of VV, and let C,C′C, C' be bases of WW. Let PP be the change of basis matrix from BB to B′B', and QQ the change of basis matrix from CC to C′C'. Then, for each linear map T ⁣:V→WT \colon V \to W, [T]C′,B′=Q−1[T]C,BP,[T]_{C',B'} = Q^{-1} [T]_{C,B} P, where [T][T] denotes the matrix of TT in the given bases. In particular, for an endomorphism TT of VV and C=BC = B, C′=B′C' = B', one gets [T]B′=P−1[T]BP[T]_{B'} = P^{-1} [T]_B P.

Remarks

The formula follows from the matrix of a composition, applied to T=id⁡W∘T∘id⁡VT = \id_W \circ T \circ \id_V. For endomorphisms, the two matrices are similar. For linear maps between two spaces, the two matrices are equivalent.

Explanations

L1 human

When we change bases, the matrix of a linear map changes in a fixed way. We translate the input from the new to the old coordinates, apply the old matrix, and translate the result back. This gives the product Q−1APQ^{-1} A P.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 12 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
