Eigenvector

Definition

Let FF be a field, let VV be a vector space over FF, let T ⁣:V→VT \colon V \to V be an endomorphism, and let λ∈F\lambda \in F. An eigenvector of TT for λ\lambda is a vector v∈Vv \in V with v≠0v \ne 0 and T(v)=λvT(v) = \lambda v. Then λ\lambda is an eigenvalue of TT.

Remarks

Each nonzero multiple of an eigenvector is again an eigenvector for the same eigenvalue. For A=(2103)A = \begin{pmatrix} 2 & 1 \\ 0 & 3 \end{pmatrix}, the vector (1,1)T(1, 1)^T is an eigenvector for 33, because A(1,1)T=(3,3)TA (1, 1)^T = (3, 3)^T. The zero vector is never an eigenvector, by convention.

Explanations

L1 human

An eigenvector keeps its line under the map: the map only stretches it, shrinks it or flips it. The stretch factor is the eigenvalue. Consider a reflection of the plane in a line. The vectors on the line are eigenvectors for 11, and the vectors perpendicular to it are eigenvectors for −1-1.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 5 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
