Quotient group

Definition

Let GG be a group and let NN be a normal subgroup of GG. The quotient group G/NG/N is the set of left cosets {gN:g∈G}\{gN : g \in G\} with the operation (aN)(bN)=(ab)N(aN)(bN) = (ab)N.

Remarks

The operation is well defined because NN is normal: if aN=a′NaN = a'N and bN=b′NbN = b'N, then abN=a′b′NabN = a'b'N. The identity of G/NG/N is N=eNN = eN, and the inverse of aNaN is a−1Na^{-1}N. When GG is finite, ∣G/N∣=[G:N]=∣G∣/∣N∣|G/N| = [G : N] = |G| / |N|. The map g↦gNg \mapsto gN is a surjective homomorphism from GG to G/NG/N with kernel NN.

Explanations

L1 human

A quotient group treats all elements of one coset as one element. For example, the integers modulo 22 come from the integers when you treat all even numbers as one element and all odd numbers as another. The normality of NN makes sure that the product of two cosets does not depend on the chosen elements.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 9 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
