Left coset

Definition

Let GG be a group, let HH be a subgroup of GG, and let g∈Gg \in G. The left coset of HH with representative gg is the set gH={gh:h∈H}gH = \{gh : h \in H\}.

Remarks

Two left cosets aHaH and bHbH are equal when a−1b∈Ha^{-1}b \in H, and they are disjoint otherwise. Thus the left cosets of HH form a partition of GG, and H=eHH = eH is one of them. In (Z,+)(\mathbb{Z}, +), the left cosets of 3Z3\mathbb{Z} are 3Z3\mathbb{Z}, 1+3Z1 + 3\mathbb{Z} and 2+3Z2 + 3\mathbb{Z}.

Explanations

A left coset is a copy of the subgroup that you move by multiplying with a fixed element on the left. Different elements can give the same coset. For the even integers inside the integers, there are two cosets: the even integers and the odd integers.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 3 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.

What depends on this

61 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
