statement proposition

Product formula for the order of HK

Statement

Let GG be a group and let HH and KK be finite subgroups of GG. Then the product HKHK has exactly ∣H∣ ∣K∣∣H∩K∣\dfrac{|H| \, |K|}{|H \cap K|} elements.

Remarks

The formula holds also when HKHK is not a subgroup. The proof counts the pairs (h,k)(h, k): two pairs (h,k)(h, k) and (h′,k′)(h', k') give the same product exactly when h′=hxh' = hx and k′=x−1kk' = x^{-1}k for some x∈H∩Kx \in H \cap K. For example, two distinct subgroups of order 22 in S3S_3 meet in {e}\{e\}, and their product has 2⋅2/1=42 \cdot 2 / 1 = 4 elements.

Explanations

L1 human

Each product hkhk can be written in several ways, because you can move an element of H∩KH \cap K from one factor to the other. Each element of HKHK has exactly ∣H∩K∣|H \cap K| such ways. So you divide the number of pairs, ∣H∣ ∣K∣|H| \, |K|, by ∣H∩K∣|H \cap K|.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 9 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
