definition

Product of two subgroups

Definition

Let GG be a group and let HH and KK be subgroups of GG. The product of HH and KK is the subset HK={hk:h∈H,k∈K}HK = \{hk : h \in H, k \in K\} of GG.

Remarks

The set HKHK is a subgroup of GG if and only if HK=KHHK = KH. It need not be a subgroup. In the symmetric group S3S_3, two distinct subgroups of order 22 have a product with 44 elements, and 44 does not divide 66. When HKHK is a subgroup, it is the subgroup generated by H∪KH \cup K.

Explanations

L1 human

To multiply two subgroups, multiply each element of the first by each element of the second. The result contains both subgroups, but it may fail to be a subgroup, because a product hkh′k′hk h'k' need not have the form h′′k′′h''k''. In an abelian group, the product of two subgroups is always a subgroup.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 3 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
