Subnormal series

Definition

Let GG be a group. A subnormal series of GG is a finite sequence of subgroups {e}=G0⊴G1⊴⋯⊴Gn=G\{e\} = G_0 \trianglelefteq G_1 \trianglelefteq \cdots \trianglelefteq G_n = G, where each Gi−1G_{i-1} is a normal subgroup of GiG_i. The quotient groups Gi/Gi−1G_i / G_{i-1} are the factors of the series, and nn is its length.

Remarks

The subgroup Gi−1G_{i-1} needs to be normal only in GiG_i, not in GG. When each GiG_i is normal in GG, the series is called a normal series. For example, {e}⊴V⊴A4⊴S4\{e\} \trianglelefteq V \trianglelefteq A_4 \trianglelefteq S_4 is a normal series of S4S_4, where VV is the Klein four-group in S4S_4.

Explanations

L1 human

A subnormal series cuts a group into layers. Each layer is a quotient group, and you can study the layers one at a time. Good series have simple layers, like composition series, or abelian layers, like the series of a solvable group.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 10 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
