statement proposition

Extensions of solvable groups are solvable

Statement

Let GG be a group and let NN be a normal subgroup of GG. If NN and G/NG/N are solvable, then GG is solvable.

Remarks

If (G/N)(k)(G/N)^{(k)} is trivial, then G(k)⊆NG^{(k)} \subseteq N, so G(k+m)⊆N(m)G^{(k+m)} \subseteq N^{(m)} for each mm. Choose mm with N(m)={e}N^{(m)} = \{e\}; then G(k+m)={e}G^{(k+m)} = \{e\}. With subgroups and quotients, this gives: GG is solvable if and only if NN and G/NG/N are solvable. In particular, direct products and semidirect products of solvable groups are solvable.

Explanations

L1 human

If the bottom part and the top part of a group can both be built from abelian layers, then so can the whole group. You stack the layers of the top part on the layers of the bottom part. For example, S4S_4 is built from VV, A4/VA_4/V and S4/A4S_4/A_4.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
