Commutator subgroup

Definition

Let GG be a group. The commutator subgroup of GG is the subgroup generated by the set of all commutators [g,h][g, h] with g,h∈Gg, h \in G. It is written [G,G][G, G] or G′G'.

Remarks

A product of commutators need not be a commutator, so in general the set of commutators is not a subgroup. The subgroup [G,G][G, G] is characteristic, so it is normal in GG. The group GG is abelian if and only if [G,G]={e}[G, G] = \{e\}. The commutator subgroup of the symmetric group SnS_n is the alternating group AnA_n.

Explanations

L1 human

The commutator subgroup collects all the failures of commutativity in a group. If you divide the group by it, you get an abelian group. A large commutator subgroup means a group that is far from abelian.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 7 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
