definition

Commutator of two elements

Definition

Let GG be a group and let g,h∈Gg, h \in G. The commutator of gg and hh is the element [g,h]=g−1h−1gh[g, h] = g^{-1} h^{-1} g h of GG.

Remarks

The equation gh=hg[g,h]gh = hg [g, h] holds, so [g,h]=e[g, h] = e if and only if gh=hggh = hg. Some authors use the convention [g,h]=ghg−1h−1[g, h] = g h g^{-1} h^{-1} instead. The inverse of [g,h][g, h] is [h,g][h, g].

Explanations

The commutator measures how far two elements are from commuting. It is the correction factor that you need when you swap gg and hh in a product. In an abelian group, every commutator is the identity.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 2 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
  • no evidence level

What depends on this

12 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
