definition

Subgroup generated by a subset

Definition

Let GG be a group and let SS be a subset of GG. The subgroup generated by SS, written ⟨S⟩\langle S \rangle, is the intersection of all subgroups of GG that contain SS.

Remarks

By the intersection property, ⟨S⟩\langle S \rangle is a subgroup, and it is contained in each subgroup that contains SS. Its elements are the products s1ε1s2ε2⋯skεks_1^{\varepsilon_1} s_2^{\varepsilon_2} \cdots s_k^{\varepsilon_k} with k≥0k \geq 0, si∈Ss_i \in S and εi∈{1,−1}\varepsilon_i \in \{1, -1\}, where the empty product (k=0k = 0) is the identity. In particular, ⟨∅⟩={e}\langle \emptyset \rangle = \{e\}.

Explanations

L1 human

Start with some elements of a group, and add everything that you can make from them with products and inverses. The result is the subgroup generated by these elements. For example, in (Z,+)(\mathbb{Z}, +), the subgroup generated by {4,6}\{4, 6\} is the set 2Z2\mathbb{Z} of even integers.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 5 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
