statement theorem

Finite p-groups are nilpotent

Statement

Let pp be a prime number and let GG be a finite p-group. Then GG is nilpotent.

Remarks

Each quotient G/ZiG/Z_i of the upper central series is a pp-group, so it has a nontrivial centre when it is not trivial. So the upper central series grows strictly until it reaches GG, and GG is finite. For ∣G∣=pn|G| = p^n with n≥2n \geq 2, the nilpotency class of GG is at most n−1n - 1.

Explanations

L1 human

A nontrivial finite pp-group always has a nontrivial centre. Divide by it, and the quotient is again a pp-group with a nontrivial centre. Repeat this, and you climb the upper central series to the whole group.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
