Stabiliser

Definition

Let a group GG act on a set XX, and let x∈Xx \in X. The stabiliser of xx is the set Gx={g∈G:g⋅x=x}G_x = \{g \in G : g \cdot x = x\}.

Remarks

The stabiliser GxG_x is a subgroup of GG, but in general it is not normal. For the action of SnS_n on {1,…,n}\{1, \dots, n\}, the stabiliser of nn is a subgroup isomorphic to Sn−1S_{n-1}. For the action of GG on itself by conjugation, the stabiliser of aa is the centraliser CG(a)C_G(a).

Explanations

L1 human

The stabiliser of a point collects the group elements that keep this point in place. They may move other points. For the rotations of a square about its centre, only the identity keeps a corner in place.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 6 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
