Group action

Definition

Let GG be a group with identity ee, and let XX be a set. A (left) action of GG on XX is a map G×X→XG \times X \to X, (g,x)↦g⋅x(g, x) \mapsto g \cdot x, with these two properties:

  1. e⋅x=xe \cdot x = x for each x∈Xx \in X.
  2. g⋅(h⋅x)=(gh)⋅xg \cdot (h \cdot x) = (gh) \cdot x for all g,h∈Gg, h \in G and x∈Xx \in X.

Remarks

For each g∈Gg \in G, the map x↦g⋅xx \mapsto g \cdot x is a bijection of XX, with inverse x↦g−1⋅xx \mapsto g^{-1} \cdot x. The map that sends gg to this bijection is a group homomorphism from GG to the symmetric group Sym⁡(X)\operatorname{Sym}(X). Conversely, each homomorphism G→Sym⁡(X)G \to \operatorname{Sym}(X) gives an action of GG on XX. A right action is a map X×G→XX \times G \to X with x⋅e=xx \cdot e = x and (x⋅g)⋅h=x⋅(gh)(x \cdot g) \cdot h = x \cdot (gh).

Explanations

L1 human

A group action lets the elements of a group move the points of a set. The identity does not move any point, and moving by hh and then by gg is the same as moving by ghgh. For example, the rotations of a square move the four corners of the square.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 4 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
