Nilpotent group
Definition
A group is nilpotent when it has a central series. This is a finite sequence of normal subgroups of with for each . Here is the centre of the quotient group .
Remarks
The condition means . Equivalently, the lower central series reaches , or the upper central series reaches ; the least such length is the nilpotency class. The nilpotent groups of class at most are exactly the abelian groups. The quaternion group is nilpotent of class , but is not nilpotent.
Explanations
L1 human
A nilpotent group is close to abelian in a strong sense. Each layer of a central series commutes with the whole group, up to the lower layers. Each nilpotent group is solvable, but the converse is false, for example for .
What this node needs for W2
- edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
- edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
