statement proposition

Order of the dihedral group

Statement

Let n≥3n \geq 3. The dihedral group DnD_n has order 2n2n.

Remarks

A symmetry of the regular nn-gon is determined by the image of one vertex and by whether it keeps or reverses the orientation. There are nn choices for the image of the vertex and 22 choices for the orientation. For example, D3D_3 has order 66 and D4D_4 has order 88.

Explanations

L1 human

A symmetry can send a fixed vertex to any of the nn vertices. After that, the polygon can be face up or face down. So there are n⋅2=2nn \cdot 2 = 2n symmetries.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 9 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
