Outer automorphism group

Definition

Let GG be a group. The outer automorphism group of GG is the quotient group Out⁡(G)=Aut⁡(G)/Inn⁡(G)\operatorname{Out}(G) = \operatorname{Aut}(G) / \operatorname{Inn}(G).

Remarks

The quotient exists because Inn⁡(G)\operatorname{Inn}(G) is a normal subgroup of Aut⁡(G)\operatorname{Aut}(G). An automorphism that is not inner is called an outer automorphism, but the elements of Out⁡(G)\operatorname{Out}(G) are cosets, not automorphisms. For an abelian group, Inn⁡(G)\operatorname{Inn}(G) is trivial, so Out⁡(G)≅Aut⁡(G)\operatorname{Out}(G) \cong \operatorname{Aut}(G). The symmetric group S6S_6 is the only symmetric group SnS_n with nontrivial outer automorphism group.

Explanations

L1 human

Some symmetries of a group come from conjugation by its own elements, and some do not. The outer automorphism group keeps only the second kind, up to the first kind. For many groups it is small or trivial.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 14 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
