Probability mass function

Definition

Let XX be a discrete random variable on a probability space (Ω,F,P)(\Omega, \mathcal{F}, P). The probability mass function of XX is the function pX ⁣:R→[0,1]p_X \colon \mathbb{R} \to [0, 1] with pX(x)=P(X=x)for x∈R.p_X(x) = P(X = x) \quad \text{for } x \in \mathbb{R}. More generally, a probability mass function on a countable set SS is a function p ⁣:S→[0,1]p \colon S \to [0, 1] with ∑s∈Sp(s)=1\sum_{s \in S} p(s) = 1.

Remarks

The set {x:pX(x)>0}\{x : p_X(x) > 0\} is countable, and ∑xpX(x)=1\sum_x p_X(x) = 1. For each Borel set BB, P(X∈B)=∑x∈BpX(x)P(X \in B) = \sum_{x \in B} p_X(x). For a fair die, pX(k)=1/6p_X(k) = 1/6 for k=1,…,6k = 1, \dots, 6 and pX(x)=0p_X(x) = 0 for other xx.

Explanations

L1 human

The probability mass function is a table: each possible value with its probability. The entries are never negative and they add up to 11.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
