Galton–Watson process

Definition

Let μ\mu be a probability distribution on {0,1,2,… }\{0, 1, 2, \dots\}, the offspring distribution. Let (ξn,i)n≥0, i≥1(\xi_{n, i})_{n \ge 0, \, i \ge 1} be i.i.d. random variables with law μ\mu. The Galton–Watson process with offspring distribution μ\mu is the stochastic process (Zn)n≥0(Z_n)_{n \ge 0} with Z0=1andZn+1=∑i=1Znξn,ifor n≥0.Z_0 = 1 \quad \text{and} \quad Z_{n+1} = \sum_{i=1}^{Z_n} \xi_{n, i} \quad \text{for } n \ge 0. Here ZnZ_n is the size of generation nn, and an empty sum is 00.

Remarks

(Zn)(Z_n) is a Markov chain on {0,1,2,… }\{0, 1, 2, \dots\}, and 00 is an absorbing state. Extinction is the event that Zn=0Z_n = 0 for some nn. Let mm be the mean of μ\mu and let GG be its probability-generating function. Then E[Zn]=mnE[Z_n] = m^n, and the generating function of ZnZ_n is the nn-fold composition G∘⋯∘GG \circ \dots \circ G. The extinction probability is the smallest solution q∈[0,1]q \in [0, 1] of G(q)=qG(q) = q. Assume μ({1})<1\mu(\{1\}) < 1. Then q=1q = 1 if m≤1m \le 1, and q<1q < 1 if m>1m > 1.

Explanations

L1 human

The Galton–Watson process follows a family tree in which each person has a random number of children. If people have on average at most one child, the family dies out with probability 11. If they have more, it can survive forever.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
