Markov chain
Definition
Let be a nonempty countable set. Let be a stochastic process with values in . It is a Markov chain with state space if for each and all states with . The chain is time-homogeneous if does not depend on .
Remarks
The condition is the Markov property in discrete time. For a time-homogeneous chain, the numbers form the transition matrix . The initial distribution and determine the law of the chain: . Markov chains also exist in continuous time and on general state spaces.
Explanations
L1 human
A Markov chain has no memory beyond the present state. Consider the weather each day: if tomorrow depends only on today, the sequence of weather states is a Markov chain.
What this node needs for W2
- edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
- edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
