Absorbing Markov chain
Definition
Let be a time-homogeneous Markov chain with transition matrix on a state space . A state is absorbing if . A state that is not absorbing is transient. The chain is an absorbing Markov chain if it has at least one absorbing state and each state can reach an absorbing state. That is, for each there are an absorbing state and an with .
Remarks
For a finite absorbing chain, write in the canonical form with the transient states first: . The fundamental matrix is . The entry is the expected number of visits to the transient state , starting from the transient state . The expected number of steps before absorption from is the -th entry of , where is the column vector of ones. The absorption probabilities are the entries of . A finite absorbing chain reaches an absorbing state with probability .
Explanations
L1 human
An absorbing chain wanders for a while and then gets stuck in a trap state forever. The fortune in the gambler's ruin problem is an example: the states and are traps.
