Hypergeometric distribution
Definition
Let , and be integers with , and . The hypergeometric distribution with parameters , and has the probability mass function
Remarks
A population has objects, and of them are successes. Draw objects without replacement, each subset of size equally likely. Then the number of successes in the sample has this distribution. The mean is . The variance is for . When is large compared with , the distribution is close to the binomial distribution with parameters and . The probability of exactly aces in a hand of cards is .
Explanations
L1 human
An urn has red and blue balls. Draw a few balls without putting them back, and count the red ones. The count has the hypergeometric distribution. Each draw changes the urn, so the draws are not independent.
