statement proposition

Generating function of a sum of independent random variables

Statement

Let X1,…,XnX_1, \dots, X_n be independent random variables with values in {0,1,2,… }\{0, 1, 2, \dots\}, and let S=X1+⋯+XnS = X_1 + \dots + X_n. Then for each complex zz with ∣z∣≤1|z| \le 1, the probability-generating functions satisfy GS(z)=GX1(z) GX2(z)⋯GXn(z).G_S(z) = G_{X_1}(z) \, G_{X_2}(z) \cdots G_{X_n}(z).

Remarks

Proof: zS=zX1⋯zXnz^S = z^{X_1} \cdots z^{X_n}. The factors are independent, so the product rule for expectations applies. Example: a sum of nn independent Bernoulli(pp) variables has the generating function (1−p+pz)n(1 - p + pz)^n. This is the generating function of Bin⁡(n,p)\operatorname{Bin}(n, p). For a random number NN of i.i.d. terms XiX_i with NN independent of the XiX_i, the sum SN=X1+⋯+XNS_N = X_1 + \dots + X_N has GSN(z)=GN(GX1(z))G_{S_N}(z) = G_N(G_{X_1}(z)).

Explanations

Adding independent counts corresponds to multiplying their generating functions. This turns the hard computation of the law of a sum into a product of power series.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
