Bernoulli distribution

Definition

Let p∈[0,1]p \in [0, 1]. The Bernoulli distribution with parameter pp is the distribution on {0,1}\{0, 1\} with the probability mass function p(1)=p,p(0)=1−p.p(1) = p, \qquad p(0) = 1 - p. Equivalently, p(k)=pk(1−p)1−kp(k) = p^k (1 - p)^{1-k} for k∈{0,1}k \in \{0, 1\}. One writes X∼Bernoulli⁡(p)X \sim \operatorname{Bernoulli}(p).

Remarks

The mean is pp and the variance is p(1−p)p(1 - p). The indicator 1A\mathbf{1}_A of an event AA has the Bernoulli distribution with parameter P(A)P(A). It is the distribution of the outcome of one Bernoulli trial, with 11 for success. It is the binomial distribution with n=1n = 1.

Explanations

L1 human

The Bernoulli distribution describes one yes-or-no experiment: 11 means yes and 00 means no. A fair coin, with 11 for heads, has the Bernoulli distribution with p=1/2p = 1/2.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What depends on this
