statement theorem
Chernoff bound
Statement
Let be a real random variable with moment-generating function , and let . Then
Remarks
Proof: for each , . Markov's inequality gives . Then take the infimum over . For a sum of independent , . So the bound becomes , which decreases exponentially in many cases. For with mean and , a standard consequence is .
History
The bound is named after Herman Chernoff.
Explanations
L1 human
The Chernoff bound gives tail estimates that decrease very fast, often exponentially. It is much stronger than Chebyshev's inequality for sums of many independent terms, such as the number of heads in many tosses.
What this node needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
What depends on this
1 node uses this node, directly or through other nodes.
