Skewness

Definition

Let XX be a real random variable with E[∣X∣3]<∞E[|X|^3] < \infty, mean μ\mu and standard deviation σ>0\sigma > 0. The skewness of XX is γ1=E[(X−μσ)3]=μ3σ3,\gamma_1 = E\left[\left(\frac{X - \mu}{\sigma}\right)^3\right] = \frac{\mu_3}{\sigma^3}, where μ3\mu_3 is the third central moment.

Remarks

A distribution that is symmetric about its mean has skewness 00. The converse is false. Positive skewness usually means a longer tail on the right. Negative skewness usually means a longer tail on the left. The skewness does not change under X↦aX+bX \mapsto aX + b with a>0a > 0. For a<0a < 0, it changes sign. The exponential distribution has skewness 22.

Explanations

L1 human

Skewness tells to which side a distribution leans. Incomes have positive skewness: most values are moderate, and a few are very large.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
