Conditional probability distribution

Definition

Let XX and YY be random variables on one probability space. Discrete case: let XX and YY be discrete and let xx satisfy P(X=x)>0P(X = x) > 0. The conditional distribution of YY given X=xX = x has the probability mass function pY∣X(y∣x)=P(Y=y∣X=x)=P(X=x, Y=y)P(X=x).p_{Y \mid X}(y \mid x) = P(Y = y \mid X = x) = \frac{P(X = x, \, Y = y)}{P(X = x)}. Continuous case: let (X,Y)(X, Y) have a joint density fX,Yf_{X, Y}, and let fXf_X be the marginal density of XX. For each xx with fX(x)>0f_X(x) > 0, the conditional distribution of YY given X=xX = x has the density fY∣X(y∣x)=fX,Y(x,y)fX(x).f_{Y \mid X}(y \mid x) = \frac{f_{X, Y}(x, y)}{f_X(x)}.

Remarks

In the discrete case, pY∣X(⋅∣x)p_{Y \mid X}(\cdot \mid x) is the law of YY under the conditional probability P(⋅∣X=x)P(\cdot \mid X = x). In both cases, the joint law is the marginal times the conditional: fX,Y(x,y)=fX(x) fY∣X(y∣x)f_{X, Y}(x, y) = f_X(x) \, f_{Y \mid X}(y \mid x). If XX and YY are independent, the conditional distribution of YY given X=xX = x is the law of YY, for each such xx. In general measure theory, one defines it as a regular conditional distribution. This is a probability kernel κ\kappa with P(X∈A,Y∈B)=∫Aκ(x,B) μX(dx)P(X \in A, Y \in B) = \int_A \kappa(x, B) \, \mu_X(dx).

Explanations

L1 human

The conditional distribution answers the question: "If I know XX, how is YY distributed?" For a person of height 180180 cm, it describes the possible weights of that person and their chances.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
