Cumulative distribution function

Definition

Let XX be a real random variable on a probability space (Ω,F,P)(\Omega, \mathcal{F}, P). The cumulative distribution function of XX is the function FX ⁣:R→[0,1]F_X \colon \mathbb{R} \to [0, 1] with FX(x)=P(X≤x)for x∈R.F_X(x) = P(X \le x) \quad \text{for } x \in \mathbb{R}. More generally, the cumulative distribution function of a probability distribution μ\mu on R\mathbb{R} is F(x)=μ((−∞,x])F(x) = \mu((-\infty, x]).

Remarks

For a<ba < b, P(a<X≤b)=FX(b)−FX(a)P(a < X \le b) = F_X(b) - F_X(a). FXF_X is nondecreasing and right-continuous, with limit 00 at −∞-\infty and limit 11 at +∞+\infty. Conversely, each function with these properties is the cumulative distribution function of some distribution. The jump of FXF_X at xx is P(X=x)=FX(x)−lim⁡t→x−FX(t)P(X = x) = F_X(x) - \lim_{t \to x^-} F_X(t). For a fair die, FX(x)=⌊x⌋/6F_X(x) = \lfloor x \rfloor / 6 for 0≤x<60 \le x < 6, FX(x)=0F_X(x) = 0 for x<1x < 1, and FX(x)=1F_X(x) = 1 for x≥6x \ge 6.

Explanations

L1 human

The cumulative distribution function adds up the probability from the left up to the point xx. Its graph starts at height 00 on the far left, never goes down, and reaches height 11 on the far right.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
