Continuous uniform distribution

Definition

Let a<ba < b be real numbers. The continuous uniform distribution on the interval [a,b][a, b] is the distribution on R\mathbb{R} with the probability density function f(x)={1b−aif a≤x≤b,0otherwise.f(x) = \begin{cases} \dfrac{1}{b - a} & \text{if } a \le x \le b, \\ 0 & \text{otherwise.} \end{cases} One writes X∼U⁡(a,b)X \sim \operatorname{U}(a, b).

Remarks

For a≤c≤d≤ba \le c \le d \le b, P(c≤X≤d)=(d−c)/(b−a)P(c \le X \le d) = (d - c)/(b - a). The cumulative distribution function is F(x)=(x−a)/(b−a)F(x) = (x - a)/(b - a) for a≤x≤ba \le x \le b, with F(x)=0F(x) = 0 for x<ax < a and F(x)=1F(x) = 1 for x>bx > b. The mean is (a+b)/2(a + b)/2 and the variance is (b−a)2/12(b - a)^2 / 12. If U∼U⁡(0,1)U \sim \operatorname{U}(0, 1) and FF is a cumulative distribution function with quantile function QQ, then Q(U)Q(U) has the cumulative distribution function FF.

Explanations

L1 human

The uniform distribution is "a point chosen at random in an interval, with no preference". For U⁡(0,10)\operatorname{U}(0, 10), the chance to land between 22 and 55 is 3/103/10, the length of the piece over the length of the interval.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
