Gamma distribution

Definition

Let α>0\alpha > 0 and β>0\beta > 0. The gamma distribution with shape α\alpha and rate β\beta is the distribution on R\mathbb{R} with the probability density function f(x)={βαΓ(α)xα−1e−βxif x>0,0if x≤0,f(x) = \begin{cases} \dfrac{\beta^\alpha}{\Gamma(\alpha)} x^{\alpha - 1} e^{-\beta x} & \text{if } x > 0, \\ 0 & \text{if } x \le 0, \end{cases} with the gamma function Γ(α)=∫0∞tα−1e−t dt\Gamma(\alpha) = \int_0^\infty t^{\alpha - 1} e^{-t} \, dt. One writes X∼Gamma⁡(α,β)X \sim \operatorname{Gamma}(\alpha, \beta).

Remarks

The mean is α/β\alpha / \beta and the variance is α/β2\alpha / \beta^2. Another common form uses the scale θ=1/β\theta = 1/\beta. Gamma⁡(1,β)\operatorname{Gamma}(1, \beta) is the exponential distribution with rate β\beta. For an integer n≥1n \ge 1, Gamma⁡(n,β)\operatorname{Gamma}(n, \beta) is the law of a sum of nn independent Exp⁡(β)\operatorname{Exp}(\beta) random variables. It is the Erlang distribution. If X∼Gamma⁡(α1,β)X \sim \operatorname{Gamma}(\alpha_1, \beta) and Y∼Gamma⁡(α2,β)Y \sim \operatorname{Gamma}(\alpha_2, \beta) are independent, then X+Y∼Gamma⁡(α1+α2,β)X + Y \sim \operatorname{Gamma}(\alpha_1 + \alpha_2, \beta). The chi-squared distribution with kk degrees of freedom is Gamma⁡(k/2,1/2)\operatorname{Gamma}(k/2, 1/2).

Explanations

L1 human

The gamma distribution with an integer shape nn is the waiting time for the nn-th event of a Poisson process. For example, it can model the time until the third customer arrives.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What depends on this
