Exponential distribution

Definition

Let λ>0\lambda > 0. The exponential distribution with rate λ\lambda is the distribution on R\mathbb{R} with the probability density function f(x)={λe−λxif x≥0,0if x<0.f(x) = \begin{cases} \lambda e^{-\lambda x} & \text{if } x \ge 0, \\ 0 & \text{if } x < 0. \end{cases} One writes X∼Exp⁡(λ)X \sim \operatorname{Exp}(\lambda).

Remarks

The cumulative distribution function is F(x)=1−e−λxF(x) = 1 - e^{-\lambda x} for x≥0x \ge 0, so P(X>x)=e−λxP(X > x) = e^{-\lambda x}. The mean is 1/λ1/\lambda, the variance is 1/λ21/\lambda^2 and the median is ln⁡2/λ\ln 2 / \lambda. Some authors use the scale β=1/λ\beta = 1/\lambda as the parameter. The exponential distribution is memoryless: P(X>s+t∣X>s)=P(X>t)P(X > s + t \mid X > s) = P(X > t) for s,t≥0s, t \ge 0. If X1,…,XnX_1, \dots, X_n are independent with Xi∼Exp⁡(λi)X_i \sim \operatorname{Exp}(\lambda_i), then min⁡iXi∼Exp⁡(λ1+⋯+λn)\min_i X_i \sim \operatorname{Exp}(\lambda_1 + \dots + \lambda_n).

Explanations

L1 human

The exponential distribution models the time until something happens when it can happen at any moment with the same intensity. Examples are the decay of a radioactive atom and the time until the next call to a help desk.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What depends on this
