Degree of a field extension

Definition

Let L/KL/K be a field extension. The field LL is a vector space over KK, with the addition of LL and the multiplication K×L→LK \times L \to L of LL. The degree of L/KL/K is the dimension of this vector space, and it is written [L:K][L : K].

Remarks

The degree is a positive integer or an infinite cardinal. One has [L:K]=1[L : K] = 1 if and only if L=KL = K. Examples: [C:R]=2[\mathbb{C} : \mathbb{R}] = 2, with the basis 1,i1, i. Also, [Q(2):Q]=2[\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{2}) : \mathbb{Q}] = 2, with the basis 1,21, \sqrt{2}. The field R\mathbb{R} has infinite degree over Q\mathbb{Q}, because Q\mathbb{Q} is countable and R\mathbb{R} is not.

Explanations

L1 human

The degree counts how many elements of the big field you need, as a basis, to write every element with coefficients in the small field. Every complex number is a+bia + b i with a,ba, b real, so the degree of C\mathbb{C} over R\mathbb{R} is 22.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 9 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
  • no evidence level

What depends on this

23 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
