statement theorem

Tower law

Statement

Let K⊆L⊆MK \subseteq L \subseteq M be fields. Then [M:K]=[M:L]⋅[L:K].[M : K] = [M : L] \cdot [L : K].

Remarks

The proof: let u1,…,udu_1, \dots, u_d be a basis of LL over KK, and let w1,…,wew_1, \dots, w_e be a basis of MM over LL. Then the products uiwju_i w_j are a basis of MM over KK. The formula also holds for infinite degrees, as a product of cardinals. So M/KM/K is finite if and only if M/LM/L and L/KL/K are finite. If [M:K][M : K] is a prime number, then M/KM/K has no intermediate field other than KK and MM.

Explanations

L1 human

Degrees multiply along a tower of fields. For example, [Q(2,3):Q]=2⋅2=4[\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{2}, \sqrt{3}) : \mathbb{Q}] = 2 \cdot 2 = 4. The law is like Lagrange's theorem for groups, and it is the main tool to compute degrees.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 11 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.

What depends on this
