Intermediate field

Definition

Let L/KL/K be a field extension. An intermediate field of L/KL/K is a subfield EE of LL with K⊆EK \subseteq E.

Remarks

Then L/EL/E and E/KE/K are field extensions, and one calls K⊆E⊆LK \subseteq E \subseteq L a tower of fields. The fields KK and LL are intermediate fields of L/KL/K. For example, Q(2)\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{2}) is an intermediate field of R/Q\mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Q}. The fundamental theorem of Galois theory describes the intermediate fields of a Galois extension.

Explanations

L1 human

An intermediate field sits between the small field and the big field. Galois theory gives a way to list all such fields, by a correspondence with subgroups of a group.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 9 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.

  4. Subring definition
  5. Unit of a ring definition

  9. Intermediate field definition

What depends on this

25 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
