Ring homomorphism

Definition

Let RR and SS be rings. A ring homomorphism from RR to SS is a map f ⁣:R→Sf \colon R \to S with these three properties.

  1. f(a+b)=f(a)+f(b)f(a + b) = f(a) + f(b) for all a,b∈Ra, b \in R.
  2. f(ab)=f(a)f(b)f(a b) = f(a) f(b) for all a,b∈Ra, b \in R.
  3. f(1)=1f(1) = 1.

Remarks

A ring homomorphism also satisfies f(0)=0f(0) = 0 and f(−a)=−f(a)f(-a) = -f(a). For each integer n≥1n \ge 1, the map Z→Z/nZ\mathbb{Z} \to \mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z} that sends aa to its class is a ring homomorphism. The map Z→Z\mathbb{Z} \to \mathbb{Z}, a↦2aa \mapsto 2a, preserves sums but is not a ring homomorphism. A bijective ring homomorphism is a ring isomorphism.

Explanations

L1 human

A ring homomorphism translates one ring into another and keeps the arithmetic. It does not matter if you add or multiply first and then apply ff, or apply ff first. Reduction modulo nn is the main example.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 3 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
